Limerick Triathlon Club January Training Day
Recap by Mark Dempsey
Limerick Triathlon Club held the first of our monthly training days in UL arena on Sunday 14th of January. On the day 18 members of the club of all levels showed up for the swim, bike and run sessions.
Everyone completed a triathlon-specific warm up before breaking up into two groups – one group swam a distance of 2000m while the other group focused on swim technique. Participants learned a lot about warm-up and cool-downs, which I hope will be replicated in their training sessions over the next couple of months.
Members on our regular Sunday Parkway cycle met up with the training group for the bike – this got a bit complicated but as this was the first training day not everything was going to go to plan! Feedback and observations added to the lessons learned, and will be taken into account when planning future sessions.
Finally, we held a run session on the track. The focus here was on prerace activation, replicating warmups used by the top athletes in Ireland before their races. Activation drills are something over-looked by most athletes in triathlon.
The day ended at 2:45 which was just in time for the Munster match, and meant we got inside just before the turn in the weather.
Let me take this opportunity to thank the 2018 LTC committee for letting this training day happen. This is something that the committee are very dedicated to promoting and wish that more people will take up on the next training day.
All participants were emailed a survey – please take a minute to fill this out so we can improve all aspects of future training days.
The next training day will be held in UL on the 18th February and will be a double brick session (swim/bike and bike/run). There is a nominal charge that will include the cost of your pool entry and a light brunch.
