We’ve had a fantastic summer of racing, but for many the focus for 2022 was teh much anticipated IRONMAN weekend in Youghal.
There simply could not be any more difference between the biblical rainfall of Youghal 2019 and the baking sunshine and perfect conditions for this year’s event.
The 70.3 on Saturday kicked off early at 0600 on Saturday – this was the first time running of the event and had about 1200 athletes on the start line.
Racing the distance for the first time, Shauna Doellken O’Shea led the ladies out of the water with Kathryn Fahy in 3rd only 30s back. On the 90km bike course both put in impressive splits (2:42 and 2:47 respectively) with Kathryn now in 2nd place overall, with Shauna in 3rd. Out on the 21k run they exchange places, Shauna putting in a 1:34 run ( 2nd fastest of the day) and Kathryn 1:42, so that Shauna took 2nd place overall, and Kathryn 3rd. Edel Foster and Helen Hartigan both took 5th place in their respective Age Groups, while Marguerita McCarthy finished her first 70.3 distance, despite taking a nasty tumble off the bike.
On the men’s side Ronan Costelloe was 11th overall in 4:35, also winning the ‘Windmill Hill’ Prime as the fastest cyclist on the section for the day. Mike Quinlivan and Darragh Fanning both came in over 5 hours. Ed Fahy meanwhile took 3rd place in his AG. Well done to Richard Roche, Shane Costelloe, Mick Keane, Jonathan O’Connell and Ronan Queally.
Sunday there was twice the distance to cover including Windmill Hill twice, in the IRONMAN.
We had 10 athletes start the race and all 10 finished – a mix of season IRONMAN athletes and rookies, congratulations to all 10. We had fantastic on teh ground coverage, with photos and videos being sent in by live by Garron Mosley & Ken Crowley – check out our Facebook or Instagram.
Special mention to John O’Sullivan who smashed the course coming home 27th overall, taking 2ng in his AG
