After 50 days of sunshine on Thursday night the rain fell! But like the grass that is in dire need of water, triathletes are in dire need to push themselves….
After setting the pontoon up like an ITU event with the blue mats and the numbers down, the rain washed them away . I was getting a bit nervous as I had no definite amount of people and when the rain fell I was thinking I’ll be here on my own. But as the old movie said “IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME”. As it was a training race it was a day for some to try a non-wetsuit swim (well the water was 20.6)
Following a the short briefing and safety announcement the race started at 7pm sharp (ahem except there is always one……)
The pontoon is off at a slight angle so the first buoy is close, to level out the race, the second buoy to straighten it up and by then at 150m the leaders were already in the full swing of things. A long straight to buoy 3 it was well strung out with Ross and Aaron leading. But today was going to be a day for the women. Dee and Sinead W out first with Sinead L only waiting to get running. The other big competition was the races with in the race. I could name them but I’m not sure they even know they are racing against each other!
Like the swim the transition was lined but the rain washed it away too. But the plan B worked just as well.
I didn’t get to see much of the race so hopefully the times might help fill in the gaps.
Aaron O’Brien was home first, with Ross Higgins & And Luke Lyons following
Sinead Lynch was on first female, Rosie Clarke in Second, Sinead Walsh in third.
After the race, like all of the LTC races the athletes pick up a few bits and pieces (barriers, mats, cones etc). Makes life a lot easier.
On a personal note: thanks to all the Marshall who had to stand in the rain and take numbers and times like I did before the day of the timing chip. To Elisa who let me run with it and got all the contacts. To Kristof media who had the drone up for images to be posted. Alan Loftus for the Sports Massages afterwards. Liam and Sharon O’Regan the photos. Sean Yelverton, Liz Gabbet (Past chair) Pat Lysart for boat cover. St Micheal Rowing Club for the use of there fantastic facilities..
But Niamh Yelverton and Brenda Cosgrove- the work on the times you saved me hours thank you!
