Triathlon Coach Simon Ward has provided us with some great in-depth information on Hydration during Exercise. Click on the following links for more detail on this important topic. Thanks, Simon! From Andy Blow at Precision Hydration:Exercise Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) is most often caused by excessive consumption of water, or other low sodium drinks (including relatively low sodium sports drinks) before, during or after exercise. The best way to avoid it is to avoid drinking ahead of thirst and to learn to listen to the body and drink only as much as thirst dictates. In some cases during long or hot events, if sweat rates are high and/or sweat sodium losses for an individual are very high supplementing with salt / sodium can be very helpful in reducing the drop in blood volume that can occur with high levels of sweat loss and help to maintain performance, but extra salt supplementation should not just be used to compensate for taking in lots of unnecessary extra fluids. Remember that fluid and electrolyte levels in the body are good at self regulating so if you learn to listen to your instincts (drink when you become a little thirsty, take in salt when it tastes good) and don’t over (or under) do either you will not only stay healthy but likely perform at your best too.
