Congratulations to Willie Carey, who was awarded the inaugural Ciarán Smyth Perpetual Cup on Saturday. The cup is named in honor of Ciarán, who died earlier this year, and who’s PJ Mathews business was a long time sponsor of the Club and our races. We were delighted that two of Ciarán’s granddaughters Iona & Freya Keane were on hand to present the cup.
Willie Carey has been involved in the Hell of The West since the early days, and although he has ever competed, was an innovator in sports timing, setting the standard in the country for the timing of Triathlon races, even introducing transitions times. Early timing was done with pen, paper and stopwatches, and then collated by Willie on his trusty Commadore 64 and printed out in time for the prize giving party. Technology has changed, but Willie was at the finish line again this year, ensuring fast and accurate results can be delivered.
On behalf of us all at Limerick Triathlon Club, thank you Willie, you really are a legend of Hell of the West.
