After long months of training and preparation, the Triathlon season 2016 kicks off in the Mid west this weekend. The Joey Hannan Triathlon is running earlier than usual this year, unfortunately the same weekend as our neighbouring event the North Tipp Sprint hosted by Nenagh TC, however with both oversubscribed, triathletes are obviously keen to test all that winter training!
Our Try event is often a first step into the sport, and is also a popular with Youth (14 to 16) athletes. While the sprint event is often dominated by Junior athletes (16 to 19 year olds), with Nenagh being a National series and Intervarsity event, we may well have winners from the senior ranks. The Olympic distance – the only pool based Standard distance event on teh calender – is popular with those who are aiming for an early middle or Long distance evenst to get some race practice in. With 3 distances on offer we often have families participating, and we will have athletes aged from 14 to 65 in action.
There is a big entry from our neighbours in Ennis, Boru, & GoTri; Galway, Cork, Tipp, Clonmel, Eden, Predator, Tralee and Trilakes, also have big travelling parties and entries too from Dublin clubs Pulse, Fingal & Belpark, Wexford, Westport, Blackwater & Cobh.
With such an early in the season event, it’s hard to predict who will be fastest, but with plenty of age group prizes on offer from our prize pot of over €3,000, so there will be plenty of winners.
We look forward to welcoming our 600 athletes to UL, fingers crossed for a perfect Spring day.
