Another great race, by Limerick Triathlon Club

The 28th Kilkee Hell of the West Triathlon was a huge success this weekend despite the challenging weather conditions. The spectators were out in force, friends & family of the athletes were lining the beach and roads of Kilkee to cheer their loved ones on. Over 46 different triathlon clubs were represented; which is a huge compliment to the Limerick Triathlon Club that people traveled from near and far.

Bryan Keane was first over the line in a time of 2hr 9mins. A former Eurpopean Champion, Brian is returning from injury and chose this race as his first Olympic distance race back. Keane is well on his way to recovery having a phenonminal run in the tough conditions. Shane Scully, from Nenagh, was second over the line. Shane had a very strong cycle and led out the run, however that was not enough to hold off Keane.

With huge excitement, there was a "neck in neck" race for third. Brian McCrystal & Trevor Woods raced down the strand line. Trevor has represented Ireland many times in the past and is a favorite in Kilkee year on year. Brian however is a former professional soccer player turned triathlete and found an edge today in the tough conditions. He narrowly beat Trevor by seconds the crowd went wild. South African born Bjorn Ludick came in fifth.

The first-lady home was Jennifer O Connell, who had a great race. Limerick born, she is now living in Dublin. A former competitive swimmer, she burst onto the triathlon scene this year and glided home in an amazing 2hrs 27mins. Second was Vanessa Fenton, from Dublin. Vanessa was on top form and is a strong all rounder, but didn't have enough to catch Jennifer. Third was limerick woman Andree Walkin followed by Kim Hickey, from Dublin. Lynn Algar, also from Limerick had a strong race coming in fifth.Andree Walkin & Dave Richardson won perpetual trophies for 1st Limerick Female & Male home.

The kiddies "Splashed and Dashed" in an all Kids event on the beach during the main race, and there was a Junior event in neighbouring Carrigaholt run in conjunction with the West Clare Tri Club the following day. As weekends go this was a great one for families!

This year the roads were wet, the winds were high and the course was very challenging. Despite the wet conditions over 100 volunteers marshaled the course, and along with our two medical officers everybody came home safe and sound. The race organisers and committee had done an amazing job in the run up to the event, so the day ran smoothly and the mood was relaxed, the way it should be in Kilkee!
