This year Lorcan Byrne completed HOTW for the first time. Lorcan told us that HOTW had beaten him before – in 2015 his calf cramped on swim and popped running up beach, in 2016 shoulder slipped in and out on the swim, had to be pulled from the water. So in 2017 he was back again.
We we delighted to get his message after the race :
“In case you don’t recognise the name I was the last one to finish on Saturday, I just wanted to drop you and the club a quick email to say many thanks for waiting until I shuffled over the line, was very much appreciated to be greeted by some friendly (all be it concerned that the 130kg prop was going to die on the course) faces, and it really did mean a lot to me. Have to say the name is very well deserved, by far the toughest Olympic I have done, and that cycle is not for the faint hearted, I hit a wall at 36k and the wind seemed to be coming from everywhere. A special thank you to my support vehicle driven by Mark or Sean, I was a bit delirious and cant remember his name, he was fantastic at keeping me going on the run, please tell him thank you from me, also to Nicky Di Lucia who I have known since I was a kid for her support in transition and making sure I kept going.”
