Congratulations and well done to all athletes who completed the LTC 2017 Duathlon yesterday. With conditions more suitable for ducks, is was great to see a strong mix of junior and senior athletes, braving the elements and finishing the tough course with a smile. This event is typically a barometer for athletes on how well training went over the winter months and for others it is often a first taste of competition in two disciplines in advance of taking on a full triathlon. It was good to see a number of parent and child competitors participating in the race adding a fun element to the occasion. Best performance on the day was arguably that of Race Director Michael Collins with his enthusiasm on the PA and the strong encouragement given to all finishers in the race.
Aichlinn O’Reilly and Rory Sexton were the guys to beat in the men’s section and so it proved after the 1st run section with little to separate both athletes. Following a strong bike leg Aichlinn gave himself some breathing space and was a comfortable winner in the end. Ian O Halloran Boru TC rounded off the men’s podium positions. In the women’s race Rio Olympian Sinéad Lynch was never troubled throughout the race and is one to watch for the season ahead. Limerick Tri Club member Shona Keane was second followed closely by Denise Compton. In the junior section well done to Cathal Browne Ennis TC and Mollie Foley Predator TC who won the male and female sections respectively. Special mention for the strong representation from Predator, Go Tri and West Clare Tri Clubs in support of this event.
The availability of hot tea and sandwiches were a welcome addition for participants, supporters and marshals alike following the race, thanks to Marcella O’Neill and committee members who turned out to lend a hand. This event saw the roll out for the first time of our new bike racks which significantly reduced the set up and disassembly times for transition. Thanks to all the marshals for their time and support without which these types of events could not be run.
The next event hosted by LTC will be a talk by Fergal O’Connor on “Nutrition for age groupers” followed by Garron Mosley on the “Road to Kona” on Thursday March 9th in Shannon Rowing Club at 7.30pm.
